Hello IFPE community and welcome to the Nation’s Capital! As one of us is a DC native, it is our most special pleasure to welcome IFPE to DC for the very first time, and to welcome our new DC friends to IFPE at this, our 35th annual interdisciplinary conference.
This year’s theme is “Truth”, a cherished commodity that often escapes consensus. Moreover, truth is especially challenged in this present moment of social, political, interpersonal, and personal upheaval. The call was issued to you, IFPE community, to come to DC and lend your wisdom to our contemplations on the challenges of truth and boy did you respond! Is there such a thing as objective truth, or is it something always negotiated amongst a multitude of perceptions? How ought clinicians conceive of truth in the psychotherapy consulting room when faced with memories of varying clarity, projections, repressions, and interpretations. And what do we do with broad social and political re-conceptions of historical truth that may contradict previously held bedrock beliefs. IFPE, you have lots to say on these matters and we have little doubt that, in addition to feasting on some fine DC cuisine (we recommend some Maryland crab), we will all leave DC sated with the insights of brilliant colleagues, sharpened by the dialogue that so distinguishes IFPE in the conference space.
And finally, inspiration from the guiding spirit whose image appears on this year’s conference materials, Isabella Boomfree, a woman so transformed by a search for truth she re-named herself Sojourner Truth.
Life is a hard battle anyway. If we laugh and sing a little as we fight the good fight of freedom, it makes it all go easier. I will not allow my life’s light to be determined by the darkness around me.
