Encounters and Escapes- Danger and Desire in the Psychoanalytic Connection

Robert J. Lifton
2008 IFPE Hans W. Loewald Memorial Award

Robert Lifton is a psychiatrist and author, known for his studies of the psychological causes and effects of war and political violence and his theories of thought reform (brainwashing). Lifton along with Erik Erikson founded the Wellfleet Psychohistory Group as well as the Center for the Study of Human Violence. He is the author of many influential books: Death in Life: Survivors of Hiroshima, Home From the War: Vietnam Veterans- Neither Victims nor Executioners, The Nazi Doctors: Medical Killing and the Psychology of Genocide, The Protean Self: Human Resilience in the Age of Fragmentation, and his most recent -- Super Power Synodrome: America's Apocalyptic Confrontation with the World.

About this year’s theme:

This year we celebrate the adventure of psychoanalytic encounter.  Psychoanalysis began with observations of the hidden pathways of desire, the repressions and sublimations that erupt into symptoms, character formation, and creativity.  In the century that followed, psychoanalysis has focused and refocused in countless ways on the mysterious, elusive labyrinth known as the unconscious mind.  We seek the encounters with danger and desire even as we seek to escape.  To be human, to seek connection, is to live and embrace danger and desire.  In the labyrinth of connections and disconnections we seek ourselves and others.  Enter the labyrinth with us...
